Chapter 26: The Cup
Lucinda looked at the cup.
She didn't take it.
"Don't be silly," she said. "It's the King's cup. I can't drink from the King's cup."
"He's given you leave," I said. "Haven't you, sir?"
"Every drop," said the King Father.
The hall laughed, uneasily, and then stopped laughing.
Lucinda's hands had gone behind her back.
"I don't drink red," she said. "It gives me headaches."
"Just a sip."
"No."
"Why not?"
She lifted her chin and looked past me, down the table.
At Piers.
He didn't move.
"Your Majesty," the oldest Alpha said, rising on his stick. "This is a feast, not a trial. The girl's frightened."
"Then she can say so," Auden said.
He stood up beside his father.
I felt him reach for me through the bond. A question, the way it had been in the Council chamber.
He wouldn't do it if I said no.
I thought of the cell. I thought of the old man in the garden with his face in the grass.
I let him feel the answer.
