Chapter 32: The First Pup
For one second, nobody on the lawn moved.
Then my father dropped the chair.
"Auden," I said.
He was already there.
He'd come over the grass so fast he'd knocked a lantern out of a tree, and it was rolling away behind him, still lit.
He put one hand under my elbow and the other on my belly.
His face had gone white to the lips.
"Okay," he said. "Okay. This is fine. This is normal. Water's normal."
"I know it's normal."
"I'm telling me, not you."
The first pain came then.
It started in my back and wrapped round to the front and squeezed, slowly.
I grabbed his shirt.
"That's a contraction," he said.
"I noticed."
The left twin had climbed onto a table.
"She's having it!" he shouted to the whole lawn. "Right now! The pup's coming!"
Every pack on the lake cheered.
We didn't make it to the car.
The second prince's mate had it backed up to the edge of the lawn with the doors open before we were halfway there.
The matron met us at the door in her nightgown with her apron over it.
