Chapter 18: Confession

I found Damiano in his study a little after eleven.

He was in the leather chair by the window, still in his shirt and trousers.

A book lay open on his knee, and he wasn't reading it.

The photograph of me at twenty-two stood on the desk where it always stood.

He looked up when I came in and closed the book.

"You look like you're going to hit me," he said.

"I might."

"Do it on the left. The right's my good side."

I didn't laugh.

I put Rhett's slip of paper on the desk in front of him, under the lamp.

He leaned forward and read it.

He read it twice.

Then he folded it once, very neatly, and set it down square to the edge of the desk.

"Are you going to send it?" he said.

His voice was so calm it frightened me.

"That depends on what you do after I tell you the rest."

"Then sit down."

I didn't sit.

I stood in the middle of his study in my robe, with my arms wrapped around myself.

"I'm going to tell you something," I said. "And you're going to think I'm exactly what Rhett says I am."
