Chapter 21: The Bank
I turned my head so the cameras could see my face and not his.
"My father isn't going to jail, Rhett," I said, just as quietly. "And by midnight you're going to be too busy to hold a phone."
His smile stayed where it was.
His eyes didn't.
He walked out through the reporters without answering a single one of them.
Damiano came across the lobby and stood beside me.
"Too busy doing what?" he said.
"I don't know yet," I said. "Give me the bands."
He looked at me.
"The paper bands," I said. "Off his money. You told me once you count everything twice."
"I said that to your father about coffee."
"Damiano."
He took out his phone and made one call in Italian.
By one o'clock we were in the back of his car on LaSalle Street with a white envelope on my knee.
Inside were thirty paper bands, the kind that wrap a stack of hundred-dollar bills at a bank.
Each one was printed with the Ambler Trust's little gold oak tree.
Each one was stamped with a date, Saturday, May twenty-third, and a teller's initials in blue pen.
