Chapter 29: Fig Tree

I took the test at six in the morning on Halloween, while the house was asleep.

The upstairs bathroom was cold.

I sat on the edge of the tub in Damiano's black T-shirt and watched the little window on the sink.

The instructions said three minutes.

It took about forty seconds.

Two pink lines.

I picked it up and looked at it in the gray light from the window.

Then I put it down on the sink and looked at it from farther away.

It didn't.

In my first life there had never been a test on any sink.

Rhett had said there was no hurry, and then there was a clinic, and then there was nothing.

I put my hand flat on my stomach under the T-shirt.

Downstairs a door banged, and Bruna yelled that somebody had eaten her cereal.

I wrapped the test in a tissue and put it in my robe pocket, and went down to breakfast with a straight face.

By three o'clock the back garden on Oakley Avenue was full.

Damiano's men had come with their wives and a cooler of beer.

The driver had brought four of his six grandchildren, in costumes.
