Chapter 22: In My Own Hand
The guards had stopped dragging him.
Councillor Jo hung between them in his red robe, his white beard crooked, and smiled at Soyul across the whole length of the hall.
"Go on, Lady Baek," he said. "Tell my sister where you were."
Nobody breathed.
Beside Soyul, Mujin had gone still as stone.
His hand moved, an inch, toward hers on the floor.
He was going to say it was him.
That he had taken her.
That she'd had no choice.
Soyul stood up before he could.
Her knees were steady.
That surprised her.
"I was in Captain Kang's quarters, my lord," she said.
The sound that went through the Hall of Spring Light was like a wave breaking on stones.
The youngest finalist put both hands over her mouth.
Along the wall a minister's wife sat down on the floor.
Soyul turned to the dais.
"Your Highness. I won't let anyone in this hall say the captain stole the king's finalist. Nobody stole anything. I chose."
Behind her, she heard Mujin get up off his knees.
He came and stood at her side.
