Chapter 14: Rule Two

Maddox left the room without a word, and I let him go.

Posey had read the message four times.

"I'll go home," she said. "I'll tell my mother myself. Then it's not a secret she can sell."

"You're not going anywhere alone," I said.

"Cressida wins if I hide."

I walked her to the kitchen and put a plate in front of her, and I did not think about Maddox.

I thought about him once, in the middle of the eggs.

At two in the afternoon my phone rang with a number I did not know.

"Ms. Prescott?" said a man's voice, very polite and very scared. "I edit the site that ran your headline. I'm calling as a courtesy."

"Go on."

"Two men in dark suits came into my office an hour ago. They did not threaten me. They sat down and told me what my source's phone says about my source."

"Which two men?"

"They gave a card with one name on it. Wynn."

I closed my eyes.

"Ms. Prescott, I want it on record that I was not asked to kill the story. I was asked who sold it."

"Did you tell him?"

"I did," the editor said. "I'm sorry. I think anybody would have."

He hung up.

I put the phone down on the counter, very gently, because there was a vase near it.

"Where is he?" I said.

"Library," said Christian, from the doorway. "He's been there since noon."

I found Maddox at the oak table with three screens open and his glasses in his hand.

Christian and Dorian came in behind me, and I did not tell them to leave.

"Rule two," I said.

He did not pretend.

"Yes."

"You sent two men to a newspaper this morning."

"I sent them at ten."

"Without telling me."

"Yes."

"I stood at that gate at eleven," I said. "You were on the phone in the hall. You walked past me. You could have said one sentence."

"I could have."

"Then why didn't you?"
