Chapter 8: Eleven Months

"Take me to Seaward House," I said in the back of Christian's car.

Nobody asked why.

Dorian sat on my left and Maddox on my right, and Christian drove himself, with his eyes on the road.

They hadn't said a word about what Cressida said.

Neither had I.

We reached the Hamptons just after midnight.

I had never slept under that roof.

I'd only ever been given the key.

The steel key turned easily in the lock.

The hall was white marble and dark wood, and beyond the glass wall the black ocean threw itself at the sand.

I put my tote down on a table worth more than my mother's whole house.

Then I turned around.

"Eleven months," I said. "That's what she meant, isn't it? Say it."

Nobody moved.

Dorian looked at the floor.

Christian looked at the ocean.

Maddox took off his glasses and folded them, and that was how I knew.

"How long?" I said.

"Eleven months," Maddox said.

I heard it, and I did not understand it.

"You knew about each other."

"Yes."

"For eleven months."

"Yes."

"You never said."

"No," said Christian.

My voice came out very small.

"How?"

Maddox set his glasses on the table.

"I run a check on any man who stands near you," he said. "You know that. Eleven months ago the first name on the list was a driver who parks outside your building on weekends."

"That's Dorian's driver."

"Yes. He sat on your sidewalk for six weekends, and I wanted to know why."

"I ran his plate," Maddox said. "I found Dorian. Then I checked Christian's name against your call log, because I didn't believe it was only two."
