Chapter 8: The Allowance Card
The card was the size of a library card, and it was laminated.
The front said ALLOWANCE in plain black letters, and under it three small circles in a row.
Two of the circles had been punched out with a hole puncher.
The back said: Three per year. Unused allowances do not carry over. Dr. G. Pelham, Regulated Love.
I read it twice in the passenger seat of Shanna's car.
"I'm going to throw up," I said.
"Not in my car."
"Two holes are punched, and one is left."
"Whose card is it?"
"The girl in the waiting room gave it to me. She said he gave her one too."
Shanna pulled over at the corner coffee shop.
My phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number, and I knew it before I opened it.
I'm the one who gave you the card. Parking lot behind the clinic, behind the dumpster, in ten minutes. Please come alone.
I did not come alone.
I came with Luther, because Shanna had a shift and he had been parked outside the coffee shop in his truck.
He had heard about the clinic from my sister.
He didn't ask what I needed.
He leaned over and opened the passenger door.
"I'll wait at the end of the alley," he said. "If you wave, I'm there."
The girl was already behind the dumpster, smoking a cigarette and shaking.
She was twenty-six, she told me, and her name did not matter.
She was married to a man who had been Christian's client for a year, and Christian had taken her on as a couples case.
"He gave me the card in our first session," she said. "He told me my husband's patience was a limited resource, and I should spend my allowance wisely."
