Chapter 19: The Shower
The church hall smelled of coffee and sheet cake, and every folding chair was taken.
Pink and yellow balloons were tied to the piano, and a banner over the stage said Welcome Baby in my sister's favorite script.
The whole choir was there, in their good cardigans, with my aunt at the front table beside a pile of gifts.
I walked in wearing the gray cardigan, with a wrapped box in my arms and the plastic sleeve in my purse.
Daphne sat on a decorated chair at the front, in white, with her hands folded over her belly.
Preston stood beside her with a glass of punch.
My mother came to meet me halfway down the aisle.
"You came," she said, low.
"I said I would."
"Then say what you have to say."
The whole room went quiet and turned toward me.
I set the gift box on the table and turned to face my sister.
"Daphne," I said. "I'm sorry I opened my door to you. I'm sorry I gave you a key and a bed, and I'm sorry I believed you."
A murmur ran through the choir.
My mother's eyes closed.
"That's not an apology," someone whispered, and Preston laughed, and then he stepped forward and tapped his spoon on the glass.
"If I may," he said. "I have something to say, and it's long overdue."
He took Daphne's hand and held it up.
"This is the most courageous woman I know. Some of you have heard that our family has been through a difficult month. I want to say publicly that I am the father of this child."
