Chapter 21: No Room

I got home before my mother's sedan, and Daphne was still on the porch.

She had sat down on her suitcase with her white coat over her knees, and she was shaking in the cold.

The porch light was on, and the same camera above the door watched us both.

"Don't call the police," she said. "Please. I'll go in a minute."

I stopped at the bottom of the steps.

Under that light she looked small and young, and I was too tired to be moved by it.

"What do you want, Daphne?"

"Mom said I can sleep in her spare room tonight," she said. "But she looked at me like I was a stranger. She said I'd have to find somewhere by Monday. I can't go to Preston, I don't know where he is."

"Why are you here?"

"Because you always took me in."

She said it simply, and I understood that she believed it was a reason.

"You've got a room," she said. "You've got three. I'll be quiet. I'll cook, I'll clean, I'll do anything you say. Just until the baby comes."

"No."

She blinked.

"Cor."

"No, Daphne."

"I'm five months pregnant."

"You are six months along," I said. "I know the dates, Daphne. For three years I tracked every week."

Her face crumpled, and she began the cry I had been hearing since she was four.

It was loud and beautiful, and it filled the porch and went down the street.
