Chapter 7: Flowers at the Front Desk
The bruise on my cheek had gone yellow by Monday, and I covered it with concealer before work.
My mother had left four voicemails over the weekend, and every one of them was about pills I did not take.
I sent Tucker's video to my lawyer instead of answering, with a note that said my mother had struck me and told people I was unstable.
My lawyer wrote back in ten minutes: Keep every message. Don't engage.
At ten, my husband walked into the dental office carrying two dozen red roses.
The waiting room was full.
A father held a boy with a swollen cheek.
Two women in their seventies sat by the fish tank with their purses in their laps.
The billing clerk looked up from the front desk and went still.
Preston walked past her without a glance.
"Brianna," he said, and he used the voice he saved for the clients who owed him money. "I need five minutes."
"I'm working," I said from behind the counter.
"Then I'll say it here."
He set the roses down on the desk, on top of a stack of insurance forms.
He turned to face the room and put one hand over his heart.
"I know you're angry," he said. "You have every right. I was weak, and I made a mistake with someone who needed me, and I will spend my life making it up to you."
The two women by the fish tank stopped talking.
"It was one lapse," he went on, softer. "Daphne was frightened, and I let it get out of hand. But we are a family. We can fix this."
"Preston," I said. "Go home."
"I don't have a home. You changed the locks."
"You have a car and a credit card."
"I have a baby coming," he said.
The father with the boy turned his whole body toward us.
