Chapter 8: The Plug
His apartment over the Stovepipe was one long room with a slanted floor.
I had never been up the back stair before that Saturday night.
There was a narrow bed against the far wall with a quilt on it, a kitchen at the near end, a table with two chairs.
A window looked straight down on Main Street.
A single street lamp stood outside it, and its yellow light fell across the table and the floor.
The room smelled like bread, and also like him.
"You live here," I said.
"Since I was eighteen," he said. "Mémère charges me rent in loaves."
"Is that legal?"
"It's Vermont."
He pulled the shade halfway and stopped with his hand on the cord.
"Leave it," I said. "I like the light."
"Anyone walking by can see up here."
"At nine on a Saturday? Who's walking by?"
He looked at me for a moment and let go of the cord.
I had a second box in my bag.
It had come on Friday, in a plain padded mailer, and I had opened it in the vault.
I set it on the table next to the salt and pepper.
Inside it, in a small cloth bag, was a plug of smooth black silicone no longer than my thumb, with a flared base.
I held it up to the lamp.
His breath went out of him.
"That's small," he said.
"That's the point. It's the first one."
"It's very black," he said.
"Etienne."
"Sorry," he said. "I'm nervous."
"I know you are." I put it down. "Clear the table."
He swept the salt and the napkin holder to the counter.
