Chapter 24: The True Book

The clerk's table stood at the foot of the platform in the church hall, on the first Saturday of April, where it had always stood.

I came down the center aisle with my account book under my arm.

It was an ordinary town meeting.

Forty people sat in the pews, the radiators ticked, and somebody had left a coffee urn on the windowsill.

The front pew on the aisle was full for the first time in thirty years.

The Grange women had decided among themselves that it was a nuisance to keep an empty seat.

There was no pie.

I set my account book on the table.

The old clerk looked up.

He was thinner than he had been in November, and happier.

"Miss Pinkham," he said.

"It's Dally," I said.

"It's the only name I've ever answered to."

"The selectmen have voted to appoint you," said the clerk.

"Five to nothing.

"The post has been vacant since Mr. Hemenway, and yours was the only name put forward."

I looked at him.

"Appoint me what?"

"Clerk of the Town, if you will have it," he said.

"I'm seventy-one.

"I should like somebody to read this book who isn't afraid of it."

The hall had gone quiet.

My father sat in the third row with his cap in his hands, as he had sat in November.
