Chapter 6: Forty Missed Calls

By the end of the first week, my phone had forty missed calls.

I went through them on the edge of the crew house bed, sitting on top of the covers with my boots still on.

Twenty-two were from Cecelia, nine from Cormac, and the rest from a number I'd saved as "Northlight."

I let the last one ring out.

Then the phone started up again, and the screen said, "Cecelia."

I answered it, because I was tired of listening to it buzz.

"Em!" She sounded out of breath. "Oh, thank God. Where have you been? I've been calling for days."

"Iceland. I told you."

"I thought you were joking." She laughed, a little wildly. "Em, the new video went up. The one without the script. Have you seen the comments?"

"No."

"They hate it. The lines are awful, we couldn't get through a take. Cormac froze twice. I need you to send me a template, anything, just the structure. You could do it in an hour."

"No."

There was a pause on the line.

"What do you mean, no?"

"I mean I'm not doing it."

"Em, you've never said that to me."

"I know," I said. "I'm saying it now."

She started to say my name, and I hung up.

Almost at once a message arrived from the brand manager.

She was kinder, which was worse.

"Mr. Quill, our creative director would like to discuss a consultant fee for new Hearthlight scripts. Name your number."

I read it twice.

I typed back, "I'm not available," and added nothing else.
