Chapter 20: The Great Square

The inner gate was shut when the Lowmarket reached it, with a line of city guards across the arch.

The Lowmarket stood backed down the hill road behind Ryota, with the carts and the troll at the end.

Corisande rode up the line at the head of her forty knights.

"The escort assembles in the Great Square," she told the gate captain. "The escort is forty knights, one Gold on the roll and everyone walking behind him."

The gate captain looked at forty swords, and then at the troll, and opened the gate.

By noon the Great Square held every soul in Ardesca who could walk.

In the middle of the square stood the city stone, black and tall as a man, with a stair of three steps around it.

The four heroes stood on the top step in their silver breastplates and white cloaks.

Ryota stood below them in his navy work jacket, with a Gold card on a string and a plastic strawberry on his wrist.

The king sat on a high platform hung with red and gold, with his nobles in rows behind him.

Lord Morvaine stood at his shoulder with the gray staff.

Along the east side stood Corisande's forty knights in blue.

Along the west side stood the guild, Copper to Gold.

And down the north road out of the square, as far back as Ryota could see, the grain carts stood wheel to wheel.
