Chapter 14: The Open Gate
He came back at noon and found her sitting in the middle of the room, with the letter on her knee.
He stopped in the doorway.
He looked at the open chest, and at the paper, and at her face.
Then he closed the door very quietly and stood with his back to it, the way he had the night before.
"You found it," he said.
"The chest is deeper outside than inside."
"Yes."
"You said keep it at the foot of the bed."
"Yes."
"Dated the day I asked for the deed." Her voice shook, and she hated it.
"Day three."
"Before I spent a single night in your arms."
"Before the zither, before the shrine."
"You said 'Done' before I finished the sentence."
"I signed it that morning. I had hoped you would ask."
"So I did all of it for nothing."
"You did none of it for nothing."
"I counted the days!" She was on her feet.
"Do you understand that?"
"I lay awake doing sums on three years."
"I counted every night I had to get through, and I made myself brave about it."
"The whole time I could have walked out with a house and my own name."
"You let me think I was serving a sentence."
"I let you think what the contract said."
