Chapter 19: The Decree
The eunuch read the decree in the Hall of Clear Dawn, under the painted gold clouds, by the light of forty lamps.
The court knelt to hear it.
Yuwei knelt beside the prince with her palms on the floor and her heart beating high in her throat.
"By the grace of heaven," the eunuch intoned.
"His Majesty addresses his loyal kinsman, Lu Chengzhou, Prince of Anbei, commander of the northern border."
"His Majesty has marked the prince's long service, and the quiet of the frontier these six years."
"His Majesty has marked also that the House of Anbei stands without an heir."
"A house with one wife and no child stands in danger."
Yuwei felt the prince go still beside her.
"Therefore His Majesty bestows upon the Prince of Anbei his own cousin's daughter, nineteen years old."
"She is to be received as a wife of equal rank, in the third month."
"The Prince will receive in return the renewal of his command for ten years, and the double pension of the border."
