Chapter 11: Where the Water Goes

I played the message twice.

I stood in Lars's kitchen in his flannel shirt, with my bare feet on the cold boards, and listened to Garrick cry.

Lars leaned against the counter with his arms folded and let me.

"The green one," I said. "He gave me that tie on our first anniversary."

"Do you want to call him?"

"No."

"You could."

"I could tell him I'm alive," I said, "and he'd cross that ice before I put the phone down. And then I'd have to watch him find out about the pup, and decide what the Holmberg law says he's owed."

"That's a no."

"That's a no." I pressed the button and the tape clicked off. "He wants someone to tell him it's over so he can stop. I'm not going to give him that. Not yet."

"What do you want?"

I had been waiting for him to ask.

"I want every wolf on that south shore to hear what happened to Eli," I said. "Out loud, in front of Garrick, with Linnea standing there. I want to remember it myself first, and then I want them to hear all of it."

"You don't remember it."

"I will."

"And if you remember something that isn't what you hoped?"

"Then I'll say that too."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I'll stand next to you," he said. "Wherever it is. Whenever."

"You said that like a vow."

"It was one."

Heat came up through my chest, and it had nothing to do with the stove.

I crossed the kitchen and put my good hand on his chest.

"Is that all you've got?" I said.

"Meaning?"

"I'm standing in your shirt."

His eyes dropped.

The shirt hung to the tops of my thighs, and under it I wore nothing at all.

"I noticed," he said.

"You've noticed all morning."

"I'm a disciplined man."

"Not very," I said, and I sank to my knees on the cushion he'd left on the floor.

His breath went out of him in a rush.
