Chapter 4: The Hand
Petra came at midnight, on foot, four miles around the west end of the lake through the snow.
She knocked twice on the cabin door with her medicine bag in her other hand.
Lars had called her that afternoon from the landline, because my cousin was the only person I trusted with my hand.
When she saw me sitting at the kitchen table she didn't say a word.
She put the bag down, walked straight over, and wrapped both arms around my head.
She smelled like woodsmoke and arnica, and she was shaking.
"You stupid girl," she said into my hair. "You stupid, stubborn girl."
"I'm sorry."
"I stood at your funeral this morning," Petra said. "I held a candle. I kept my face still while three hundred people sang over an empty box. Do you know what that cost me?"
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Be alive." She let go and wiped her face briskly with her palm. "Show me the hand."
I showed her.
She unwrapped Lars's splint, looked at the four swollen fingers, and made a small noise through her teeth.
"They've started knitting wrong," she said. "Shifter bone. It heals in a day, whether you want it to or not. They have to be broken again and set straight, or you'll have a claw for a hand."
Lars, leaning on the counter by the stove, folded his arms.
"Can she be put under?"
"With a baby this size? No." Petra opened the bag and laid out a roll of gauze, flat wooden splints and a short leather strap. "Bite on this, Marit."
"I've been bitten on worse."
