Chapter 6: Cold Hands
The egg sat in the open cloak in the guard's arms, gray-green and speckled, with its one thin crack.
"Lorne smelled it on you," Delphine said. "He's an SS wolf. He can smell anything."
"He's an SS wolf this week," I said.
Lorne's face went dark red.
The guard holding the egg looked like he'd rather be holding a live snake.
"Headmistress wants everyone in the courtyard," he said. "All of you."
By the time we got there, half the academy had heard.
Students hung out of every window around the old stone courtyard.
The Headmistress sat on a bench by the fountain with her cane planted between her feet.
The guard set the egg on the fountain's edge beside her.
"Well," she said. "Somebody explain this to me quickly. I have a meeting."
Delphine stepped forward before I could.
She'd been crying on the way over.
Prettily.
Her eyes were pink, not her nose.
"Headmistress, this belongs to our father. It's a fossil. A dead shell, a curio. It's worthless, but it's ours, and she took it from our cellar without asking. She's been very upset since the Exchange. I think she wanted to take something of mine back."
There it was.
She'd turned it into a story about a jealous sister in one breath.
The windows murmured.
"Is that true?" the Headmistress asked me.
"I took it from the cellar," I said. "It's not dead."
"It's a fossil," Delphine said.
"It's warm."
"It's a rock, Briony."
"Then hold it," I said.
Delphine blinked.
I picked up the egg off the fountain's edge.
It was warm in my hands now.
