Chapter 11: Last Ledger
My desk sat in the outer office, under a green lamp, with a view of the stairs.
By seven, there was nothing on it but the last ledger and a pen.
The boxes of my things stood by the door, taped and labeled.
The Hall below was dark and empty.
Cass came up the stairs with his boots loud on purpose, so I would hear him.
He shut the outer door behind him and slid the bolt.
I did not look up.
"I have one page to sign," I said. "Then I'm done."
"Sign it."
"I have to read the totals out. It's how I close a book."
"Then read them."
He came around my desk.
He didn't touch me.
He lowered himself to the floor, slowly, on both knees, and slid in under the desk between my chair and the wall.
I looked down.
He looked up at me from the shadow of the kneehole, with his hands flat on my knees.
The green lamp lit one side of his face.
"Cass."
"Read me the totals," he said.
"What are you."
"I'm going to be on my knees for you until you finish the page. Read."
My heart raced.
I picked up the ledger.
My hands were not steady.
"Payroll," I said. "Forty-one jobs. Four hundred and twelve thousand, six hundred."
His hands slid up my thighs and pushed my skirt to my hips.
