Chapter 12: Empty House
The cottage was empty, and our voices echoed in it.
The movers had taken the table and the couch and the bed.
They had left the clawfoot tub, which belonged to the Hall.
One pile of quilts in the middle of the bedroom floor.
I had spread them there that afternoon in case I felt sentimental.
I felt sentimental.
Cass stood in the doorway with the dark behind him and a paper bag of takeout in his hand.
He put it down on the bare floorboards.
"Last night in the house," he said.
"Last night."
"Are you sad?"
"A little. Mostly I'm greedy." I pulled my sweater over my head. "Take your clothes off."
He did.
He took his time folding his shirt and laying it on the windowsill, because the floor was dusty and he was Cass.
I stood in my bra and skirt and watched his back flex as he bent.
"Hurry up," I said.
"You said take my time."
"I said take your clothes off."
He turned around with his belt in his hand, and the grin on his face was young and wicked.
I had never seen it before this month.
I wanted to see it every day.
He dropped to his knees on the quilts and pulled me down with him.
We kissed, long and open-mouthed, on our knees in the middle of an empty room.
His hands unhooked my bra, and he peeled it off me slowly, and he put his mouth on my breast and sucked.
I threw my head back and said his name at the ceiling.
"Lie down," he said.
"Bossy."
"Please lie down."
"Better."
I lay on my back on the quilts.
He did not climb over me yet.
He kissed his way down my belly instead, slow, from my ribs to my hip bone.
I felt his breath on the skin under my skirt.
He pushed the skirt up with his nose.
He set his mouth on me for a long, lazy minute, just tasting.
My hips came up off the quilts, and I said his name in a voice I did not recognize.
"Not like that," I said. "I want you in me."
"Then say it again."
"I want you in me, Cass."
He lifted his head, and his mouth was wet.
