Chapter 21: The Window
He drove us up the ridge with one hand on the wheel and the other wrapped around mine.
Neither of us said a word.
The house stood dark at the end of the gravel road, a long log shape against the stars.
He opened the door and the one lamp on the milk crate was already lit, and we walked in together.
The front room had a wall of window.
It faced the whole valley, and beneath the window ran the plank bench he had built along the sill.
He had never put a cushion on it.
Far below, the lights of Brule Bend lay scattered in the dark.
I crossed the bare floor in my heels and stood at the glass.
He stopped behind me.
He did not touch me.
"You said yes in front of the whole pack," he said.
"I did."
"I want to hear you say it here."
I looked at my reflection in the window.
Green velvet, tousled copper hair, a pink flush up my throat.
His shadow stood behind me, tall and still.
"Yes," I said. "To you. Alone. In the dark where nobody's watching."
His breath caught.
"I keep my job," I said. "I keep my Saturdays. I'm yours until I say otherwise, and I'll say it to your face."
"I'd want you to."
"Then yes."
I felt the heat of his palms before they touched me.
He slid them up my arms, over the velvet, to my shoulders.
He found the zipper at the back of my neck.
He drew it down slowly, one inch at a time, and kissed each inch of skin as it came free.
I leaned my head back against his chest.
The dress fell off my shoulders and pooled around my hips.
He pushed it the rest of the way down.
I stood in my bra and heels, with the cold glass an inch from my nose and the valley lights spread out below.
"Leave the shoes," he said, and his voice cracked.
