Chapter 23: Review
Hilde Fossum arrived at seven on the dot, with her cane, a coffee cake in a tin, and no apology.
I was in the kitchen in Cass's grey Henley and nothing else, making coffee on a stove I had never used.
Cass stood in the doorway in his jeans with his shirt in his hand.
The bite mark on his shoulder was a dark oval, plain as a stamp.
Hilde looked at it.
She looked at me, at the Henley that reached the middle of my thighs.
She set the tin on the counter.
"The application went through," she said.
"How do you."
"Dag told me the Council voted last night, after you left. Three to nothing. The Council decides nothing about you."
I put down the coffee pot.
"On the record?"
"In the minutes. I read them at six."
Her round red glasses flashed.
"Your uncle would have been proud, and I am quite pleased myself."
"Hilde."
"Eat the cake. It's the sour cream one."
We ate the cake at his counter, standing, because there was one chair.
She told us the sawmill foreman had cried.
She told Cass the pack books were in better order than she had expected and that the cellar boxes were still on the stage.
"Cass will pay you for the consulting," she said to me, pointing her cane at him. "Not a favor. A wage."
"I have a wage," I said. "I have a job."
"A different wage. We'll discuss it Saturday."
"Saturdays are mine."
"Then we'll discuss it on a Tuesday."
She nodded.
I laughed so hard I had to hold the counter.
"I'll see myself out," she said, gathering the cane.
