Chapter 5: The Interview
I had put a straight wooden chair in the middle of my bedroom rug.
At nine o'clock exactly, Cass knocked on the cottage door, and I called, "It's open."
I heard him come down the little hall.
I was sitting on the end of the bed with my legs crossed, in a black slip.
I had a clipboard on my knee and a pencil behind my ear.
He stopped in the bedroom doorway.
His eyes went to the chair, then to the slip, then to the pencil.
"Sit," I said.
He sat.
He looked enormous on it, all knees and shoulders, in a clean grey shirt with the cuffs rolled.
"Hands behind you," I said. "Hold the back of the chair. Don't let go until I say."
He put his hands behind him.
His chest pulled the shirt tight when he did it.
"Good," I said, and I made a small pencil tick on the clipboard.
He saw me do it.
"What's that?"
"A score. Answer honestly and you get a point. Ready?"
"Yes."
"Question one. Why do you want this position?"
He didn't hesitate.
"Because I've been in this pack my whole life."
His voice was level.
"The only time I ever wanted something for myself, I didn't know it until you said you were leaving."
I made a tick.
"That's a point," I said. "Question two. What do you do on a Saturday?"
"Nothing."
"That's not an answer."
"I run the pack. I eat standing up. Then I go to bed at ten and listen to the phone not ring."
"Why not ring?"
"Because I don't want anybody to call but you."
Tick.
I stood up and crossed the rug and stopped in front of him with my knees against his.
He tilted his head back to look at me.
"Question three," I said. "What do you want to do to me, tonight?"
His breath caught.
"I'd like," he said, and stopped, and his ears went red again.
I waited.
"Say it," I said. "Plainly. It's an interview."
"I want you."
"That's not an answer, either. What do you want to do?"
"I want to put my mouth on you."
His voice dropped, rough.
"I want to put my hands everywhere. I want to be inside you. I want you to tell me I'm good."
I felt that low in my belly.
"That's four points," I said. "That's very good, Cass."
I set the clipboard down on the bed.
"Now I'm going to take my own time with you, and you're going to hold that chair."
"I'll hold it."
"If you let go, you lose a point."
"I won't."
