Chapter 8: Against the Cabinet
"She called you the help," Cass said.
He was standing with his back to the long oak table and his chest rising and falling.
"She did."
"I wanted to put her on the road."
"I know."
"Why didn't I?"
"Because I told you not to."
I crossed the room and put both my hands flat on his chest.
I could feel his heart through the Henley, slamming.
"I'm jealous," I said.
It came out of me flat and hard.
I had not planned to say it.
"Of her?"
"Of every woman who is going to walk into that Hall in a nice coat and look at you like a seat at a table."
"Ebba."
"I haven't got a coat like that. I have the keys and a calculator."
"You have me," he said.
"Do I?"
"The Council can seat whoever they like." His eyes were fierce. "You're the only one in this building."
"Say it again."
"You're the only one. In this building, in this pack. In my head."
His voice shook.
"You're the only one I want, and I'm sorry it took me six years to read the room."
That did it.
I grabbed his collar and kissed him.
It was a bruising, furious kiss, with teeth in it.
He kissed me back as hard.
His hands came up under my sweater and dragged it over my head, and I tore at his buckle.
