Chapter 13: The Third Man
Zachary shut the car door and stood in the rain with his hands hanging open.
He had not brought an umbrella, and he did not seem to want one.
Windows were lighting up all along Cedar Street.
A man in 2A leaned out in his undershirt, and the dog in 2B started barking again.
I grabbed my green coat off the hook and went down the stairs two at a time.
Hattie came after me in her slippers with the mallet.
Neither of us said a word about it.
The street was cold and loud with rain when I stepped out.
Zane had turned to face the car, and now the two of them stood six feet apart under the broken streetlight.
Same height, same jaw, same wet black hair.
They looked like mirror images, locked in an argument.
"You never left," Zachary said to him.
"No."
"She threw you out, and you stood in the road like a dog."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Zane's mouth moved, and nothing came out.
Zachary looked at him for a long moment, and I watched something arrive in his face.
