Chapter 21: My Mother's Table
My mother opened the door in her scrubs and looked at Zane for a long, quiet moment.
She had come off a night shift an hour ago and had not changed.
"You're the one with the face," she said.
"Yes, ma'am," said Zane.
"Wipe your feet."
He wiped them.
Then he wiped them again, because she was still watching.
The house in Quincy smelled of pot roast, floor wax, and thirty years of the same radio station.
Hattie had come too, with a bakery box, and went straight to the kitchen to be useful and be fed.
My mother sat me down at the table and sat Zane across from me, on the side by the window.
"June tells me you came back from the future," she said, and ladled out potatoes.
"That's a lot to hear before dinner."
"It is," Zane said.
"I've done two night shifts on a trauma floor, so I'll believe anything once."
"Pass the salt."
He passed the salt.
"Now," she said.
"You told my daughter she was dead."
