Chapter 14: Five Million

I took her to the hangar kitchen.

I'd like to say I thought it through. I didn't.

I just knew that if she wanted something from me, she could ask for it in front of my people.

The lunch crowd was in. Twelve lobstermen, the mechanic, two women from the church, and Kit at the corner table with her sketchbook.

The room went silent when Constance walked in.

She stood in the doorway in her cream coat and looked at the woodstove, the tin walls, the hawk drawing over the counter.

Sawyer's grandmother looked back at her.

They were about the same age. Neither of them blinked.

"Table's open by the window," Sawyer's grandmother said. "Chowder's nine dollars. You'll pay before you eat. I've heard about your family."

Constance sat by the window.

She paid nine dollars, in exact change, from a small leather purse.

I sat across from her.

Kit moved two tables closer and didn't pretend not to listen.

"I'll be brief," Constance said. "My son doesn't know I'm here."

"He never does."

"Kenzie's lawsuit is unfortunate. I advised against it. It will be in the papers for a year." She smoothed her napkin on her lap. "I'd like to make it go away. All of it."

She took an envelope from her purse and set it beside her chowder.

"Five million dollars."

Somebody at the counter put his spoon down so hard it rang.

"Kenzie drops her suit. You drop your complaint with the Boston police, and you sign a confidentiality agreement about the night of the gala. The divorce goes through quietly. You never speak about my family in public again."

"Five million," I said.

"Enough for your sister's medicine for the rest of her life. Enough for a house in Portland and a new plane for your friend." She glanced toward the hangar door. "Several new planes."

The mechanic, for once, had his hearing aid on.
