Chapter 17: The Co-op
"We're grounded," I told him. "We don't have insurance."
"Did I ask about your insurance?"
"Sir..."
"I've known your family since your grandfather. I'm not dying in a rich man's helicopter." He squeezed my sleeve harder. "Get the plane."
Sawyer came pounding down the wharf behind me.
He crouched beside the old man and took his pulse with two fingers, the way he must have done a thousand times in Alaska.
Then he looked up at me.
"We can't sell him a ticket," he said.
"I know."
"Nothing says we can't give a neighbor a ride."
Pierce was still standing on the wharf.
"That's insane," he said. "You don't even know if that's legal."
"Then sue me," Sawyer said. "Everybody else is."
He picked the old man up off the crate and carried him toward his truck.
The fishermen parted for him.
The Delano nurse closed her bag and, after a second, followed us. "I'm coming," she said. "He needs somebody in the back."
Pierce didn't stop her.
I flew. Sawyer sat in the back with the nurse and the old man.
Twenty-two minutes to Rockland. The ambulance was waiting.
The old man got a stent at midnight.
He called me from his hospital bed the next morning, very cross that they wouldn't give him bacon.
