Chapter 20: Patient Records

I put the phone down on the counter.

Everybody in the hangar kitchen had heard. The island had no volume knob.

"So that's it?" Kit said. "She just takes it back?"

"She just takes it back."

"And the detective?"

"His request is 'under review' by the hospital's lawyers. It's been under review for five weeks."

Sawyer's grandmother set the coffee pot down hard.

"Those lawyers work for the wing," she said. "The wing works for her."

"The vote's in eight days," the co-op bookkeeper said. "If nobody hears that call before then..."

She didn't finish.

Kit had gone quiet. She was turning her fork over and over.

Then she looked up at me.

"Darce. Whose lungs were they?"

"What?"

"The call. Whose lungs was she declining?"

"Yours."

"Mine. My lungs. My transplant. My patient number." Kit put the fork down. "So whose phone call is it?"

The kitchen went still.

"I'm a patient," Kit said. "I've been a patient for twenty-four years. I know my rights better than my lawyer would, if I had one. I can get a copy of my own chart any time I want."

"A phone call isn't your chart," the bookkeeper said.

"It is if they put it in my chart." Kit turned to me. "Did they?"
