Chapter 22: Headlights

The storm came in on Friday afternoon, the thirteenth, the night before the vote.

Rain sideways off the bay. Wind gusting to thirty-five. The ferry cancelled at noon.

Sawyer was in Rockland with the Hen, waiting out the worst of it with the afternoon mail.

I was in the hangar office with the radio, a space heater, and the harbormaster's daughter-in-law.

She was twenty-six and very pregnant and very calm, and her contractions were ten minutes apart.

"It's my second," she said. "The first took nineteen hours. I'm fine."

"You're not fine. You're in labor on an island in a storm."

"I'm fine for an hour," she said. "My husband's getting the car seat. Don't tell him I said I'm fine. He'll relax."

Her husband was in the hangar kitchen, being fed pie by Sawyer's grandmother whether he wanted it or not.

At five-fifteen Sawyer's voice crackled over the radio.

"Thatch, Kinney. Got a gap in the weather. I'm coming to get her."

"Kinney, Thatch. Wind's two-four-zero at twenty-five, gusting thirty-five. Runway two-two. It's ugly."

"I like ugly."

"I know you do."

"Twenty minutes," he said. "Put the coffee on."

"Nobody wants your coffee."

"Put it on anyway."

The harbormaster's daughter-in-law was smiling at me.
