Chapter 4: Witnesses

Pierce held the roses out to me.

I didn't take them.

He held them a little longer, then handed them to a passing nurse.

"How is she?"

"Breathing," I said. "No thanks to you."

He sighed. A patient, reasonable sigh.

"I know you're upset."

"How's your heart, Kenzie?"

Kenzie's eyes went wide and wet.

"It was a panic attack," she said. "The doctors said it can feel exactly like a heart attack. I'm so sorry, Darcy. I'm so sorry about the timing."

"Which doctors?"

"What?"

"Which hospital did you go to?"

Pierce stepped between us.

"Can we do this somewhere private?"

"No," I said. "I think we should do it right here."

The ICU corridor was busy. Shift change.

Two nurses at the station. A man in a hospital gown pushing his own IV pole. The coordinator coming out of her office with a folder.

Sawyer was behind me by the vending machines. I didn't have to look to know.

"Somebody called this floor at nine forty-one last night," I said. "A woman. She said she was calling for the Delano family. She declined Kit's lungs."

Pierce frowned.

"That's insane."

"She had Kit's patient number. Who has Kit's patient number, Kenzie?"

The coffee cup shook in Kenzie's hand.

"I do the Foundation's forms," she said slowly. "Lots of people in the office do."

"Lots of people in the office were at the gala last night. You were standing next to my husband when I said Kit had lungs."

"I was in the ER at nine forty-one!"

Her voice cracked high and loud.

A nurse at the station stopped typing.

"I was on the floor not breathing," Kenzie said. "Everybody saw me. Everybody saw him carry me. And you think I was on the phone? Ruining your sister's life?"
