Chapter 18: The Stairwell
Jang knew a night porter at the Seorin who owed him a favor.
At eleven, Ye-won and Tae-oh went in through the staff entrance behind the laundry.
Tae-oh wore a hotel jacket over his sweatshirt.
Ye-won wore a cap.
The porter held the service door for them and kept his eyes carefully on the ceiling.
"Twenty minutes," he said.
The ninth-floor stairwell was concrete and steel, with a yellow bulb in a cage and a handrail painted green.
It smelled of cold dust.
Tae-oh stopped on the landing.
He looked at the third step from the top, and Ye-won watched his face change.
"Here," he said.
"I know."
"I sat here."
"I know. I sat there."
She pointed to the second step down.
He sat.
Ye-won sat where she had sat that night, two steps below him, with her back against the wall.
For a minute neither of them said anything.
