Chapter 23: Page Eighty-Eight

Ye-won wrote the scene on the back of a bus ticket.

She wrote it in pencil, on the way to Paju, and then she rewrote it, because the first draft was all nerves.

By the time the bus pulled in at the gate of the soundstage it was five lines long.

The director was waiting for her at the door.

The director wore the same man's cardigan, and she held a cup of barley tea in both hands.

"He rewrote it," the director said. "Three weeks ago. The ending."

"I know. He left me the page."

"Did you read it?"

"It's blank."

"Yes."

The director gave her a dry, tired smile.

"I told him it was the worst page I'd ever read. He said it wasn't finished."

"What did you say?"

"That in that case I'd wait."

She held out a clipboard.

It was an ordinary one, black, scuffed at the corners, with a pencil on a string.

"The widow comes back to the ferry," the director said. "The captain's alone in the cabin."

"And?"

"I don't know what either of them says. And I have fourteen crew who'd like to be home by dinner."

"You want me to direct."

"I want somebody to tell me what the scene is."

Ye-won took the clipboard.

It was heavier than she expected.

The set was lit and ready: the narrow bed, the porthole, the rusted lamp.

Tae-oh sat on the edge of the mattress in the captain's rough shirt, with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
