Chapter 24: Teach Me, Again
Salt Season opened on the fourteenth of March.
Ye-won and Tae-oh watched it from the back row of a cinema in Gangnam, in the dark.
A bag of popcorn sat between them, and neither of them touched it.
Seven hundred strangers were in the room.
Tae-oh sat on Ye-won's left in a black suit and held her hand in both of his.
He had not let go since the lights went down.
The film began with rain on a ferry deck.
Ye-won had seen the cut four times.
It didn't matter.
When the first kiss came, the door scene, page fourteen, the whole cinema drew in one breath.
He was on the screen forty feet tall, leaning against a door with his arms hanging, and Ye-won watched him wait.
Then he kissed her back.
A woman two rows down made a small, startled sound.
"That's you," Tae-oh whispered into Ye-won's ear.
"That's you."
"That's your note. The second voice."
"Which one won?" she whispered.
He turned his hand over under hers and held on.
She squeezed his hand.
On page sixty-one, the bed scene, the cinema went so quiet she could hear the projector.
Ye-won didn't look at the screen.
She looked at him, in the flicker.
He was watching himself with his lips parted and his eyes bright and wet.
He looked the way you look at a photograph of someone you used to be.
"I'm looking at you," he said, without turning his head.
