Chapter 19: The Horn

Keti's POV

He put the horn into my hands, and it was heavier than I had thought.

The silver foot was cold, and the horn itself was warm where he had been holding it.

I turned it in the lamplight.

The vine around the rim ran from one side to the other and never broke.

"Say it back," I said.

"Say what?" Levan asked.

"What you gave up when you handed it over. Say it out loud, so I know you heard yourself."

He stood in his own kitchen with his empty hands at his sides.

"My speech," he said. "Six weeks of it."

"And?" I said.

"Besik's name in my mouth, in front of two hundred people. I wanted that more than I have wanted anything."

"More than a child?" I said.

"Different," he said. "It was older."

"Go on."

"I give up the right to say your name in that room before you do," he said. "I'll stand beside you. I won't say a word, even if you take the night."

I set the horn down on the table with both hands.

I looked at the silver catching the light, and then I looked at him.

"I start this one," I said.

"I know," he said.

"Upstairs."

I took him by the front of his shirt, and he came.

In the bedroom I turned the lamps up myself, all three.

Then I stood in front of the mirror and let my robe drop.
