Chapter 20: Two Hundred Guests
The Janelidze hall on Coney Island Avenue held two hundred guests, and they were all looking at my stomach.
I was thirty-three weeks along, in a black dress with the waist let out, and I did not mind.
Levan sat at my left on the Kapanadze side, with Natia on his other side.
Under the white cloth his palm lay flat on my belly.
Our daughter was awake, and she kicked once against his fingers.
Across the long head table my father sat in the toastmaster's chair with his gray mustache combed.
Besik sat at his right with Salome beside him, and he had not looked at me for an hour.
Salome had not looked at him either.
The four old men from the oath sat at the end of the table in their dark suits, and they had been watching me since the soup.
My father rose with the horn in his hand.
"To the bride and groom," he said. "May their house have sons."
The hall answered, two hundred voices, and the cups rose.
