Chapter 8: Two Lines
The coffee made me sick on a Sunday morning, and I knew before I looked at the calendar.
I had not been sick on a coffee in my life.
I stood in the upstairs bathroom with one hand on the cold sink and the other on my stomach.
I counted back to the night of the horn, and then to the night of the mirror.
Natia had left a pharmacy bag on the hall table the week before with a note that said only, "You may as well know."
I took the test out of the box and followed the instructions and set it on the shelf.
I did not look at it.
I washed my hands for as long as it took to count to a hundred, in Georgian, the way my mother taught me.
Then I looked.
Two lines.
They were so dark that I thought there must be something wrong with the stick, and I read the box again, and there was not.
I sat down on the edge of the tub and laughed until I was crying, and then I stopped and washed my face.
Levan was in the front room.
He sat on the sofa in the light of two lamps with a page of figures held close to his face.
A pencil was behind his ear, and a cup of coffee was going cold on the table.
He looked up when I came in and did not put the page down.
"You're pale," he said.
"I'm pregnant."
The page slid out of his fingers and onto the rug.
He didn't move.
I stood in the doorway in his shirt, with my arms around myself.
I watched his face go through four things in a row, and none of them was triumph.
