Traded for a Scar, I Carried His Heir and Took His Table novel · Chapter 9 of 24
Chapter 9: The Knives
My father sat at the head of the long table in the empty dining room, with my brother at his right hand.
The Sunday sun came through the front windows.
I had worked in this room for fifteen years. It smelled of onions and cumin and floor wax.
Levan came in behind me and stopped at my shoulder.
He put one hand low on my back, and kept it there, warm through my sweater.
"Sit," my father said.
"I came for my knives."
"Sit, Ketevan," my father said. "Your brother's wedding is the Saturday after Easter, April eighteenth, at the Janelidze hall. The Janelidzes want to know when the oath is paid."
"When there's a child under his roof," I said.
"A son," my father said.
I felt Levan go still beside me.
"He asked for a child," I said.
"He asked for a child, and I answered with the toast, and sixty people heard a son. I will not stand in front of the Janelidzes and say the oath was paid with a girl." My father's mustache twitched. "A girl is half a payment. Come home."
