Chapter 7: Heartbeat
The obstetrician's office was on the second floor of a brick building on Steinway Street.
The waiting room had green chairs and a fish tank, and four women with round bellies looked up when Alex Stavrou walked in.
He sat down next to me with his coat still buttoned.
He read a magazine about baby sleep for ten minutes, and I never saw him turn a page.
"Ariadne Vlachos," the nurse called.
He stood up when I did.
In the exam room I lay back on the paper-covered table with my shirt pushed up and my leggings pulled low.
The nurse squeezed cold gel onto my stomach and left.
Alex took the chair by my head.
He sat with his hands on his knees.
"You don't have to look so frightened," I said.
"I'm not frightened."
"You're gripping your knees."
He looked down.
He let go.
The doctor came in, a brisk woman with silver glasses, and shook his hand and mine.
"First baby," she said. "Congratulations to you both."
