Traded for Nine Boats, I Walked In Pregnant and Ran Their House novel · Chapter 8 of 24
Chapter 8: My Father's Daughter
My father stood up off the stoop with his cap in his hands.
He looked smaller than he had in the dock office.
He had not shaved, and the collar of his captain's jacket was frayed.
"Ari," he said.
"The old woman won't open the door."
"She doesn't know you," I said.
"She knows me.
"Everybody knows me."
Two women on the next stoop had stopped talking.
A man sweeping the steps across the street leaned on his broom.
Alex came up beside me and stood a half step behind my shoulder.
He did not say a word.
"What do you want, Papa?" I asked.
"A word with my daughter," he said.
"You've had it," I said.
"I came all the way up here," he said.
"On the bus," I said.
"On the bus with your good jacket in your bag."
He flushed.
He looked at Alex, then at my stomach, and his voice dropped to a wheedle.
"Listen to me.
"It's different now.
"There's a baby.
"That old woman will tear up the notes if you ask her.
"She'll do it for you.
"Go in and ask her, Ari, today.
"The crew hasn't been paid since October."
I stared at him.
"You came to ask me to beg," I said.
"I came to ask you to do what's right by your family."
"I did what was right by my family.
"I stood in your office and gave you the only thing I had left to give."
"Don't be dramatic."
"You signed me over for nine boats, Papa.
"In front of a lawyer.
"And you want more."
His face changed.
The wheedling went out of it.
"You always did look like your mother when you wanted something," he said.
