Chapter 12: Quick

I didn't hide it.

I'd spent three years hiding things from a man to keep the peace.

I walked back down the hall and climbed onto the bed and put the envelope on Ilya's bare chest.

He was awake before it landed.

He read it once.

Then he read it again, and his face did nothing, and the air in the room dropped ten degrees.

"No," he said.

"I haven't asked yet."

"You were going to ask to go. The answer is no."

"He wrote the child, Ilya." I tapped the second line. "He's going to keep coming. Through the lobby, through Galina, through your men. Every time I say no, he'll find something else to hold. I want to look him in the face one more time and end it."

"Then I'll end it."

"You'll end him. And then there's a war, and your men die, and his men die, and in twenty years somebody's kid comes looking for ours." I took his hand and put it on my stomach. "I want to end it my way. With words. In the place he left me."

He looked at his hand on me for a long time.

"My car outside the door," he said finally. "My men on the creek. If you're not out in twenty minutes, I come in, and I don't care what it costs."

"Twenty minutes."

"And you wear this."

He reached into the nightstand and took out a small black knife in a sheath with a strap, and buckled it around my calf himself, under my jeans.

"I'm a nurse," I said. "I'm not going to stab anybody."

"Then you'll be a nurse with a knife."

The warehouse on Chelsea Creek looked smaller in daylight.

Rust down the walls. Gulls on the fuel tanks.

The steel door was open a crack.

I walked in alone.

The concrete floor still had the dark stain where my knees had bled.
