Chapter 29: Is It Mine

Shona's POV

I got up off the rug.

I didn't take the test from him.

I stepped out into the hall and pulled the nursery door shut behind me, so the little one wouldn't wake.

"Yes," I said. "It's yours."

"Count for me."

"Six weeks. I told you to ask me again in a year, and you didn't wait."

His face did nothing.

"And how would I know who was in your bed in September?"

"Ask Galina whose bed I sleep in."

"Galina loves you. Galina would lie for you."

"Galina has never lied for anybody in her life, and you know it."

He came one step closer.

The hall was narrow, and he filled it.

"You walked into Seamus Conlon's pub," he said. "The day after his boy put two bullets in me."

"Yes."

"Alone."

"Yes. To ask why his boy knew my name. Somebody had to, and you're busy forgetting me."

"And what did he tell you?"

"That I have my mother's hands."

That stopped him for one second.

Then it made him angrier.

"You're very good," he said, low. "You know my brother's name. You know my mother's song. Who taught you, Shona? Bellucci? The Irish?"

"You did."

"I don't remember teaching you anything."

"That's not my fault."

He put his hand flat on the wall beside my head.

He leaned in until I could feel the heat off him through his open shirt.

"If you're lying to me," he said, "about any of it, the baby, the pub, the church, I'll find out."

"And then what?"

"Then you'll wish I hadn't."

I looked up at him.

His eyes were black, and his breath was coming hard, and the hand on the wall beside my face was shaking.

"No," I said. "You'll never touch me to hurt me."

"You couldn't do it a year ago with every reason in the world, and you can't do it now."

"You don't know what I can do."

"I know exactly what you can do."

I put my hand on his chest, below the dressing, right over his heart.

It was going.

"I said don't touch me," he said.

"No. You said stay out of your room." I pushed, and he stepped back. "I said don't touch me. That was my rule."
