Chapter 39: One Year
I didn't let him sleep through it.
I took his face in both hands and said his name until his eyes opened.
"You talked," I said. "Just now. In English."
He came awake the way he always did, all at once, with one hand already reaching for the drawer.
"What did I say?"
I told him.
He sat up in the dark with the sheet around his waist and his back against the headboard.
He didn't say anything for a long time.
"So I met him," he said finally. "And I gave him a year of something."
"Yes."
"And I don't know what. And he does."
I could see it start in him, right there in our bed.
The not-knowing, moving into him like damp into a wall.
In a week it would be in every room of the house.
"Get up," I said.
"It's three in the morning."
"I know what time it is. Get up and put a sweater on."
He looked at me, and he got up.
I took him to the front door in my slippers and his old sweater, and I pushed the button for the elevator.
The doors opened.
I pulled him in by the hand and let them close, and I didn't press a floor.
