Chapter 14: To His Face

Lachlan's POV

I dressed in the dark while the two of them slept.

Tobias was face down across half the bed.

Larissa lay on her side with one hand tucked under her cheek, and the sheet had slipped off her shoulder.

I stood there longer than I should have.

When I turned for the door, her fingers closed around my tie.

"Where are you going?" she said, without opening her eyes.

"To your father's house."

She was awake at once. "No. We go together."

"He asked to be heard on Tuesday. He should hear it from me first, to my face, before anyone else gives him a version."

"That was rule one."

"It's not behind your back. I'm telling you where I'm going and why."

She studied me in the gray light.

Then she pulled the tie, and I bent, and she kissed me, slow and deep.

I forgot my own errand for a while.

"Go," she said against my mouth. "Come back and tell me everything he says."

I drove out to the suburbs with my hands very steady on the wheel.

I had known the man for thirty years.

I had stood beside him at his first wedding and his second.

I had taught his daughter to ride a bike in the driveway I was now pulling into.

He opened the front door before I could knock.

He was in a work shirt with the sleeves rolled, and he had not slept either.

"I figured you'd come," he said.

"I wanted you to hear it from me."
