Chapter 8: The Challenge

We finished the first rite at dawn, and a Silverfang rider found us before the smoke cleared.

He was a young wolf in a black coat, and he would not look at my face.

"Alpha Kettlewell calls the Circle at noon," he said. "Under pack law. For Sabine Wells."

"On what charge?" Mathis said.

"Assault on a pack officer. And a false name on the pack roll." The boy swallowed. "He says the foundation fund is forfeit."

I stood up.

"He wants to take it back," I said.

"He wants you outside the gate while he does it." Mathis looked at the caskets. "The rite can wait one day. Your father's wolves are not going anywhere."

"You'll stay out of it."

"I will stay at the edge."

His eyes were steady.

"If you ask for me, I will come."

I did not ask.

At noon I walked into the Circle of Stone alone.

The whole pack stood in the ring, three rows deep, and the elders sat on the stone benches on the far side.

Corbin waited in the center in his pale suit.

Verena stood a little apart from him with her arms wrapped around herself, and she did not meet my eyes.

"Sabine Wells," Corbin said, and his voice rang. "You broke an officer's arm in my yard. You lied to this pack for three years about your name. You have no rank, no mark and no right to the Silverfang fund."

"You knew my name," I said.

A ripple went around the circle.

"The fund is mine," I said. "My parents paid for it. You built your house on it. And in this circle a pack answers to its strongest Alpha, not its loudest."
