Chapter 17: The Name on the License

They took the cuffs off in a room with one table, two chairs and a poster about bike theft.

The young officer emptied my jacket pockets into a plastic tray.

Lip balm, house keys, my old cracked phone, and my wallet.

"License," he said.

I took it out and set it on the tray myself.

He picked it up without looking at it and went out.

The door clicked.

I sat with my wrists in my lap.

There were two red lines on each one, and the bracelet sat right on top of the left one.

Twenty minutes later, the door opened again.

It wasn't the young officer.

It was the tired woman with the reading glasses on a chain.

She was holding my license.

She sat down across from me, slowly.

She put the license on the table between us, face up.

Olivia Mabry Haldane.

My mother's maiden name in the middle, where it had always been.

"I came on shift at six," she said. "Kid at the desk ran this, and it came back with a note from the registrar's office."

"Privacy flag. Call the dean before releasing anything."

"Okay."

"I've been doing this job twenty-two years." She took her glasses off and let them hang.

"I don't like being lied to on speakerphone."

She tapped the license.

"I'm putting that August call in the incident log tonight. Next to the bracelet hold. Next to this."

"Against Brielle?"

"Against whoever it lands on."

"Why didn't you just show me this in August?"

"Because I wanted one place where nobody knew it."

"And because I'm the one who decides when they do."

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she laughed, once, without any fun in it.

"Your father wrote a letter saying you're stalking his daughter."

"He did."

"You are his daughter."

"I am."

"Lord." She put her glasses back on.

"I've got a girl in overalls out front who wants me to charge you with everything in the book."

"She told the desk she's going to post this whole night."

"She will."

The officer slid a yellow form across the table.

"Defiant trespass. It's a summary citation. You'll pay a fine or fight it, and the dean will call you."
