Chapter 19: The Message
Chris showed Leander the message without a word.
Leander read it, and his face went very still.
"He's offering to leave me out of it," he said.
"He thinks that's a gift."
"I'm not withdrawing."
"I know."
"Then the board sees everything, and he sits there with his father next to the dean."
"I know that too," Leander said.
"His father votes. Mine just left."
They stood in the empty corridor outside the conference room.
Chris's mother had gone to rest in the truck, with the heating pad and a thermos.
"I'm sorry," Leander said, for the fourth time that day.
"Stop."
"I will."
"I mean stop saying it. I heard you the first time."
Leander nodded.
He pushed his hands into his pockets and looked at the floor.
Then he looked up, and there was a question in his face, plain as a printed line.
